"Big Tree" TOUR
Hike to a 2000 year old Tōtara Tree
This tour is a total of 3 Hours & can include lunch and a well deserved drink while you absorb the majesty of this beautiful ancient tree. The Tōtara Tree (Podocarpus Tōtara) are entirely native to NZ.
This is a truly special walk that takes us to a magnificent tōtara tree estimated to be around 2000 years old — a living guardian of the forest. Along the way, we’ll pass through native bush alive with the calls of korimako (bellbird) and chatter of pīwakawaka (fantail).
We have 3 options available:
-
River Crossing Route: This track includes several shallow river crossings through private land, offering a sense of adventure and seclusion. Weather permitting.
-
4WD Track Route: A gentler walk suitable for all abilities, following a scenic 4WD track to the tree and back.
-
If walking is not your thing we can drive you there, with a 15 minute walk to see the sights,
-
You have the option of adding the Wine tours to this walk. Just ask when you make your booking.
During the walk, Kristin will share local stories about the early settlers and Māori legends that connect people to the forest and the land — tales of guardians (kaitiaki), survival, and the natural cycles that shape Kaikōura. It's an experience that uplifts and invigorates.
